The SUP4SUD project addresses the integration of socially and environmentally sustainable development within urban strategic planning in European cities. As urbanization continues to rise, urban areas face significant social and environmental challenges that require comprehensive solutions. Over the past three decades, European cities have made efforts to tackle these challenges through various policy instruments and strategies, such as the Amsterdam Pact and the Urban Agenda for the EU. Despite these efforts, local technical departments often lack the capacity to implement truly holistic and comprehensive approaches.

European urban strategic planning has historically focused on economic development and urban regeneration, with recent shifts towards sustainability, citizen participation, and governance. However, integrating sustainable development into these plans remains a challenge, complicated by diverse local public management models across Europe. The project aims to explore how urban strategic planning can effectively incorporate sustainable development principles, align local sustainability policies, and contribute to the 2030 Agenda and the New European Bauhaus.
By forming a diverse consortium that includes partners from all corners of Europe and a broad representation of different approaches and models of urban management, from municipalities to regions, from innovation agencies to strategic urban planning offices, SUP4SUD aims to identify and share good practices, train local ecosystems, improve policy instruments and develop guidelines to support sustainable urban strategic planning, ultimately enhancing the effectiveness of sustainable urban development policies.
The overall objective of the project is to enhance national, regional, or local instruments that effectively integrate the dimension of integrated urban sustainable development strategically across all types of European urban areas.
